Description

We are hiring a Principal Product Designer to help craft the future of Slack. Principal Designers are leaders within our teams, helping to set the tone for work at Slack by being humble, smart, and collaborative. They define product direction and set a high bar for design. They carry features from vision through execution and launch, prototyping and honing the design to ensure it works for Slack’s diverse user base.

We believe Slack is most powerful when it can be shaped to fit the way each team works, and that extensibility is essential to making that possible. The Platform team empowers developers and non-developers alike with intuitive tools and building blocks to customize Slack, integrate workflows, and unlock new ways of working.

At Slack, we have a positive, diverse, and encouraging culture. We look for people who are curious, inventive, and work to be a little better every single day.

What you will be doing

  • Work cross-functionally with product and engineering partners to represent the design team, facilitate design discussions, and ensure design quality
  • Collaborate closely with leadership to define features and influence the overall direction of your product area, and with Design Leadership to improve our design processes
  • Design flows, prototypes, sketches, and high-fidelity UI for experiments and features
  • Work closely with engineering to ensure a high-quality implementation and user experience throughout every phase of a project, and iterate quickly based on feedback
  • Lead by example with hands-on design work and by helping teammates grow their skills
  • Provide clear, constructive feedback and build a healthy design critique culture
  • Identify connections across initiatives and ensure we are delivering a cohesive end-to-end user experience
  • Mentor other designers, support hiring, and help evolve our design team practices

What you should have

  • At least 7 years of experience in an individual contributor role on a Product Design team for desktop or mobile, delivering products from start to finish as part of a cross-functional team
  • A portfolio that demonstrates strong interaction design, visual design, and systems thinking, especially across complex or extensible products
  • Experience designing for platforms, developer tools, or integration ecosystems with a focus on flexibility and extensibility
  • A strong understanding of developer workflows and the ability to design for technical users
  • Familiarity with APIs, events, and webhooks, and how users build and connect systems using them
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, iterative environment and to balance speed with craft
  • Experience working across disciplines, including product, engineering, research, marketing, and developer relations
  • Fluency with prototyping as a tool to explore and communicate design ideas
  • Strong self-direction and the ability to contribute independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to align teams and earn trust across stakeholders
